Lacey Jo Cunningham is a former Kanakuk Kamps counselor and Kanakuk Institute graduate who was indicted twice for improper relationship between an educator and a student, then eventually sentenced to three years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on a second-degree felony charge. The charge claims Cunningham sexually abused a female student while serving as a teacher and basketball coach at Woodlands Christian Academy in Houston, TX. Cunningham served as a counselor at Kanakuk’s K-2 camp from at least 2010-2012, including leadership positions as unit coordinator and basketball clinic lead, and she graduated from Kanakuk Institute in 2012. She was released from jail in 2025.
Cunningham has resided in Washington, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, and Virginia. She’s claimed other previous employment at Valor Christian High School, Africa Inland Mission and Anastasis Academy on social media profiles.
While victims have not publicly come forward regarding abuse specific to Cunningham’s tenure at Kanakuk, she was initially identified through a tip from a former K–2 camper.
